40 years: What has Israel Learned from its Fathers?

5 June, 2007: yet another day of remembrance of those lost in conflict fighting for freedom and justice. However today we celebrate not just a moral victory amid outward setbacks, we celebrate an overwhelming strategic victory as well. On this day 40 years ago, the fledgling nation of Israel still seeking to consolidate its ownership in its homeland, decimated an overwhelming Egyptian force intent on pushing the people of Israel into the sea (death by drowning still a bit of a sore spot for Egyptian rulers whose forefathers got to swim with the horses a few millennia before). However, as we all know, the war also involved other foes such as Jordan and Syria, adding to the resounding humiliation of Israel's enemies and a tripling of Israel's real estate (which Israel should have kept).

Of course, once again the Egyptians (along with their allies) were denied, though to mix it up a bit this time they perished in the sand, and we aren’t celebrating this 40th anniversary by watching the Israelis conclude 40 years of wandering. Or maybe in some sense we are. Israel today is far from out of the woods with respect to settling the terms of its autonomy and peace with its unfriendly and uncooperative neighbors and today more than any other in Israel's recent history, the modest but powerful state seems without rudder and unable to carry out the decisive action so neccesary for its own survival.

At any rate, today is an historic day; one that most certainly most of Israel’s neighbors and some Russians are unhappy about, but one for which all who love democracy, human rights, justice, and their mothers will fully appreciate.

God bless Israel. (Now if only they’d put Benjamin Netanyahu back in charge…)

Israellycool blog reminds us of another fact today: the sons of the terrorist organization the PLO founded by Yassir Arafat are attacking Israel again. Will Israel find the courage today its parents had 40 years ago? Also, via LGF, a critique of the media then and now.
