Quote of the Day

Cinco de Mayo is a national holiday of another nation's military success.

St. Patrick’s Day is a basically religious holiday of a saint ridding another nation of snakes.

There is a difference. The other holidays you mention and many others are cultural observances. They are celebrations of peoples. They are not celebrations of another nation’s ascendancy. Cinco de Mayo is. As such, it is not appropriate that it be celebrated by the recipients of the benefits of this nation.

Finding Cinco de Mayo celebrations inappropriate here is not the same as asking the celebrants to surrender their culture or their religion. We are asking them for fealty to this country or to return to the one that is the repository of their loyalty. That is wholly appropriate.
