Personal Note: In Remembrance a Dear Friend

I thought I would take a pause a moment from the usual blogging to share an important personal anniversary today. Today marks ten years in memoriam of a dear friend and member of the family.

He was born in the spring of 1980 as Tough Booger Leo, a Quarter Horse out of the King and Leo lines. He quickly underwent a name modification upon arrival in my care.

With the best French a kid could muster, I gave him the new moniker Cheval Bien né (Gentle Horse or Horse of Noble Birth – Chevy for short. Even to those who weren’t wild about horses, upon meeting him they knew he was much more than just a horse. Beautiful, spirited, intelligent, and loyal, he was a boy’s dream.

Those of you who’ve had a favorite pet know what I’m talking about; finding that, despite your fundamental differences you share more in common and understand each other on a level intrinsically deep. This, I think is meant in part to show us how even more possible it is to find such understanding with people of different backgrounds when you share the same values.

Today ten years ago, a lifelong friend was felled by lightning and thereafter has been dearly missed. As on this day thunderstorms pass again overhead, I must admit how time seems de temps en temps to blur, yet simultaneously to contrast.

Counting the blessings today and yesterday, as well as tomorrow, there is no doubt there were manifold lessons to learn from this friend; and even now yet being learned as life today is all the richer because of those times growing up. Chevy is both missed and being looked forward to.
